Countdown to the Big Move

Jeff's family closed on their house Friday and had to move in with family while the house in Logan Square is still slowly coming along. At this moment there still are no appliances...no toilet, shower, refrigerator or stove--things that people need in order to live in proper American society. Nevertheless, Grant, Kristin and Nate will be moving in at the end of the week. Hopefully Jeff's family can move in two weeks. Despite the suspense of whether certain things will be done by the time we have to move in, everyone is looking forward to it. The move marks a new course for the band, a new level of commitment, and a lot of financial leeway as we promote the new album and work on the next new album.

Block Party

OVERHANG is playing for food and drink and for the love of the game in the Chicago hipsters paradise Bucktown/Wicker Park neighborhood this Saturday. Friends of ours are having a block party in which several bands will come to set a festive tone. Our guts-on-a-stick songs about the end of the world are not exactly party-friendly but we're hoping the ecstatic joyful revenge-against-Satan feelings will translate into a sense of well-being and togetherness nonetheless.

And the race is on for the cd duplication company to finish our cd's before the big show at "The Note" on Sept. 6. We'll be playing with "The Wildbirds" and "The Archetects". "The Wildbirds" are a Kings of Leon/Jet kind of band from Wisconsin that's getting good press (http://www.myspace.com/thewildbirds). It would be nice to have some cd's to sell to any Wisconsonites that happen to like our stuff.

A New Promotional Strategy

Last week Joel sent Richard Milne of Chicago's 93 XRT a promo cd. The DJ sent an email saying we had sent him an empty jewel case. Joel thanked him for letting us know and Richard Milne replied saying it gave him something to talk about on the air. We're not sure what he said, probably a warning to other bands wanting their music to be heard to make sure to send a cd along with the packaging or some such sage advice. We're thinking of making this our new promotional campaign, sending empty jewel cases as a clear message that we ain't sellin' out to no stinkin' commercial radio stations! Yeah! Just when they think they're gonna get our music, that's when we fool 'em and don't give 'em our music. Brilliant!

September and October are looking like big months for OVERHANG. We've got shows lined up in Grand Rapids and (hopefully) a cd release party in Chicago. I say hopefully because we don't know if the duplication is going to be quite done in time for a Sept. 6 show at Chicago's "The Note". We are also considering hiring a radio promoter to help push a single from the new album so that our music will be heard. This particular promoter seems to have an excellent strategy for promoting our music to radio stations: he puts the cd in the jewel case so that dj's can play it on the radio. Brilliant!
